Trailblazers split opener, continue early-season growth
GODFREY, Ill. — The Lewis and Clark Community College Trailblazers opened the spring season with a split against Shawnee Community College Saints before facing a challenging slate of opponents in the first week of play.
Lewis and Clark defeated Shawnee 8-4 in the season opener Wednesday February 11th at Lloyd Hopkins Field but fell 5-2 in the second game of the doubleheader.
The Trailblazers then traveled to take on the UMSL Tritons, dropping a seven-inning contest 13-2. The week continued with an 8-4 loss to St. Charles Community College Cougars.
Lewis and Clark wrapped up the stretch in Branson, Missouri, falling 7-0 to Ellsworth Community College Panthers and 14-1 to North Central Missouri College Pirates.
Head coach Alex Ferguson said the first week revealed both potential and areas for improvement.
"We have shown flashes of our ability, but overall, our consistency has not been there," Ferguson said. "We are still learning to compete as a team and to be able to overcome adversity. We have been dealt with injuries to key players and are fighting through until they get healthy."
Ferguson added that team chemistry has been a bright spot, particularly with several new players adjusting to the program.
"Our team's chemistry is strong, and the guys enjoy being around each other," he said. "New players have blended in well."
Despite the early setbacks, the Trailblazers have remained focused on effort and long-term development.
"Overall, we have competed hard," Ferguson said. "Guys want to win and will keep working hard on getting better. Our No. 1 goal is to see improvement throughout the season and to be playing our best baseball heading into the region tournament."
Moving forward, Ferguson emphasized the need for a more complete performance in all phases of the game.
"Competing as a team and being more mentally tough," he said. "We are working toward playing a more complete game offensively, defensively and pitching."
Lewis and Clark continue its spring schedule looking to build consistency and momentum as the season progresses.
