Trailblazers Men’s Basketball Gearing Up for Season Opener at Jefferson College
GODFREY, Ill. — With the 2025-26 men's basketball season set to tip off November 1 at Jefferson College, head coach Kavon Lacey and the Lewis and Clark Trailblazers are putting the final touches on their preseason preparations. After a series of competitive scrimmages, Lacey said he's encouraged by what he's seen from his group so far.
"The scrimmages have been great opportunities to grow and learn." Lacey said, "Absolutely. Not only has it helped us evaluate our team, but it has given us a chance to play different lineups, work on different rotations, and find what works and what doesn't."
Lacey emphasized that the team's main focus during the preseason has been cohesiveness and teamwork, key elements he believes will define the Trailblazers' success this year.
"It plays a major part in how we play," Lacey said. "We've really focused on playing together as a unit and not as individuals. We have to understand there's a right and wrong way to play. Basketball is a team sport that involves a lot of moving pieces."
The Trailblazers return six sophomores from last season, complemented by several new faces who have quickly made an impact.
"We've had contributions from all," Lacey said. "Honestly, everyone has stepped up in so many ways. We're learning the true definition of 'Team Together.'"
As the preseason winds down, Lacey said one of the biggest takeaways has been the team's ability to compete at a high level.
"One of the takeaways we have is that we can play and compete with any team in the country," he said. "Our goal now is to make sure we continue to play together as a team and put ourselves in positions to get better each and every day."
With the season opener on the horizon, Lacey's message to his players remains simple but focused.
"Our main goal and focus at this point is to continue to push and get better," he said. "We understand that the start of every season is exciting for everyone involved—from the parents, fans, and community. Staying the course during a long season is key. If we play for each other and have the 'don't quit' mentality, the rest will take care of itself."
The Trailblazers will open their season Friday, November 1, at 3 p.m. on the road against Jefferson College, looking to build early momentum for what promises to be an exciting year.
