Men’s Basketball Falls to Lansing on Buzzer Beater, 64–61
GODFREY, Ill. — Lewis & Clark Community College men's basketball came up just short Friday night, falling 64–61 to Lansing Community College on a last-second buzzer beater despite a hard-fought effort throughout.
The Trailblazers were led by Deight Lomax, who finished with 14 points and five rebounds. Derrion Enlow added 14 points and three assists, while Tim Halden posted 10 points and seven rebounds in a physical matchup that remained tight from start to finish.
Head coach Kavon Lacey said he was proud of his team's competitiveness, even in the tough loss.
"We fought, battled — just didn't make enough of the right plays to win the game," Lacey said. "Lansing is a good team with good players, and we knew they would play us tough."
Lacey noted that in-game adjustments centered on changing defensive looks and trying to speed Lansing up.
"We were able to make them play fast at times and force turnovers," he said. "In the end, it was what we did offensively, not taking care of the ball and forcing quick shots, that hurt us."
One of the major focal points was containing one of the nation's top scorers, a challenge Lacey felt his team handled well for most of the night.
"The key matchup was our team versus one of the country's best elite scorers," he said. "We did a pretty good job for most of the game."
Transition defense was another emphasis entering the matchup, as Lansing is known for generating a large portion of its points on the break.
"The challenge was how well they transition the ball," Lacey said. "We knew coming in they score upward of 50 points in transition, and we wanted to take that away throughout the night."
Despite the difficult ending, Lacey said the performance provides valuable insight heading into an important stretch of games around Thanksgiving.
"We have an exciting stretch of games coming up," he said. "We always want to play teams that will challenge us on both ends of the floor and use the break to work on things we'll need going forward."
