Trailblazers Show Growth Against ICC, But Cougars Prevail In Both Meetings
GODFREY, Ill. — The Lewis and Clark Community College men's basketball team faced Illinois Central College twice during the 2025‑26 season and, while both games ended in losses, the Trailblazers showed noticeable improvement between the January 3rd and January 31st matchups.
In the first meeting on January 3 in East Peoria, Illinois Central pulled away for an 82‑55 victory. By the time the teams met again on January 31st in Godfrey, the Trailblazers had gained experience against the Cougar system and were better equipped to respond to early pressure. While Illinois Central again emerged victorious, Lewis and Clark played with improved poise on both ends of the floor. The Trailblazers were more competitive in transition, executed better shot selection, and forced more contested baskets, reducing some of the early-game run momentum that had characterized the January 3rd contest.
Lewis and Clark showed measurable improvement in several areas between the two games. In terms of halftime competitiveness, the Trailblazers trailed by just two points at the break on January 3rd despite an early 10‑0 run by Illinois Central. By January 31st they kept the game within reach deeper into the second half, demonstrating increased resilience against the Cougars' pressure defense.
The Trailblazers also improved their offensive response. In the first matchup, scoring dried up for extended stretches, but in the rematch, Lewis and Clark maintained a more consistent offensive flow and avoided prolonged droughts.
Defensively, the team appeared more disciplined in the second contest. While Illinois Central continued to generate points, Lewis and Clark's rotations were better coordinated, staying connected on switches and limiting open shots.
Turnovers and rebounds continued to be areas of concern in both meetings. The Cougars' ability to convert on second-chance points ultimately made the difference in each game. Continued development in limiting opponent scoring runs and improving efficiency around the basket will be key as the Trailblazers continue Region 24 play.
