Trailblazers Rely on Defense, Communication in 72-63 Victory
GODFREY, Ill. — A strong defensive effort powered the Trailblazers to a 72-63 victory over Southeastern Illinois College on Wednesday night at George C. Terry Riverbend Arena.
Lewis and Clark set the tone early with consistent defensive pressure, holding Southeastern Illinois in check while generating offense through ball movement and timely scoring. The Trailblazers built control of the game by staying connected on the defensive end and turning stops into quality offensive possessions.
"Our overall takeaway was a great team effort," head coach Karen Lacey said. "Defensive intensity was our focus, and we knew that playing great defense would lead to better offense."
Dwight Lomax led all scorers with 19 points, pacing the Trailblazers with efficient scoring while also helping facilitate the offense.
"Dwight did a great job," Lacey said. "He was able to keep everyone involved in our offense while also making timely shots when we needed them."
Lewis and Clark's execution remained steady on both ends of the floor throughout the contest. The Trailblazers emphasized communication and discipline defensively, limiting scoring opportunities and forcing Southeastern Illinois into difficult possessions.
"The team's effort was great on both ends," Lacey said. "We've spent the majority of practice working on our defense and communication, and it really showed tonight."
As the Trailblazers turn their attention to their next matchup, the focus will remain unchanged.
"Keeping it consistent," Lacey said. "Defense and communication."
Lewis and Clark improved with the win as it continues conference play momentum at home.
