Number Four Ranked Cowley County Community College Edges Lewis and Clark in Season Opener
GODFREY, IL – Lewis and Clark Community College's men's soccer team dropped its season opener Saturday, falling 1-0 to nationally ranked Cowley Community College at Tim Rooney Stadium.
The Tigers struck early when Ishii Kanta scored in the ninth minute off an assist from Yushin Nakano. That proved to be the difference in a match where both sides created chances but struggled to capitalize.
The Trailblazers outshot Cowley 20-12, missing several great chances, and held an 8-7 edge in corner kicks, but only managed two shots on goal as the Cowley defense held firm.
Despite the result, LC head coach John Dunn said he was pleased with the performance and progress of his squad, which features 22 newcomers on a 30-player roster.
"We played well. We created a lot of chances, so there are many positives to take from the game," Dunn said. "We've shown a ton of progress since day one of preseason. Really happy with the way the boys executed today. Even though we lost the game, the reaction after the game showed we have an increased belief, and I think this will serve us well through the rest of the season."
Lewis and Clark, ranked No. 16 in the NJCAA preseason poll, faced a tough test in Cowley, which is ranked No. 4 nationally and finished as the 2024 NJCAA Division I runner-up.
The Trailblazers return to action Thursday on the road against St. Louis Community College–Florissant Valley before returning home Sept. 1 to host Miami Dade College.
