GODREY, IL — No. 17 Lewis and Clark Community College secured a statement win Saturday, defeating second-ranked Indian Hills Community College 3-1 behind a first-half surge and steady defensive play.
The Trailblazers jumped ahead quickly, with Aboudi Ibrahim scoring twice in the opening 18 minutes. Rezik Dahbor added a penalty kick in the 35th minute to give Lewis and Clark a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime.
Indian Hills (ranked No. 2) pulled one back in the 79th minute when Joseph Redmond scored off an assist from Carlos Noboa and Diego Lazaro, but Lewis and Clark's defense held firm the rest of the way.
Lewis and Clark outshot Indian Hills 13-7 and finished with three saves. The Trailblazers also took three corner kicks to Indian Hills' nine but converted their chances efficiently in the final third.
"We were very good in the first half and deserved to be leading at halftime," Lewis and Clark head coach John Dunn said. "We didn't quite match that quality and intensity in the second half, but we did enough to win the game, and that's the most important thing."
Dunn emphasized the need for consistency as the season progresses.
"We have learned a lot over the first few games, and we know we have quality," Dunn said. "Now we need to show consistency if we want to compete at the top end of a very competitive NJCAA field. The message after the game was this is one step in the right direction, not the end destination. We need to build on this and not think this is the statement win of the year. Lots of positives but lots of areas that we still must improve on."
Lewis and Clark Community College hits the road for their next match at Jefferson College on Wednesday, September 17, at 5 pm.
