Lewis and Clark Stays Sharp in Shutout, Builds Momentum for STLCC
GODFREY, Ill. — The Lewis and Clark Community College women's soccer team struck early and never looked back in a 4–0 win over Wabash Valley on Saturday, a result that head coach Justin Bernaix said reflected both poise and persistence.
The Trailblazers scored twice in the opening 10 minutes to seize control, then added two more goals while keeping a clean sheet.
"We had a positive start to the game, and scoring two goals within the first ten minutes helped us stay in control for the rest of the match," Bernaix said. "The field conditions were not ideal, but the girls kept focused and patient to eventually find two more goals and keep a clean sheet."
Bernaix noted that while the performance was encouraging, there is still room to grow in the attacking third.
"We are showing glimpses of attacking fluidity, but we are still wasting some good scoring opportunities," he said. "Again, the field conditions played a part today, but we will be continuing to work on our confidence in the final third."
The win gave Lewis and Clark a boost heading into Wednesday's matchup at St. Louis Community College, where Bernaix said training will emphasize efficiency.
"We are continuing to focus on ourselves during this stretch of games, how we attack as a team and being more efficient in front of the goal," Bernaix said. "We played the last three games without two starters due to injuries, and we hope to get them back in training this week, so that is a positive."
The Trailblazers expect a physical battle against STLCC but are determined to stick to their game plan.
"St. Louis CC will be a physical test for us, especially on the road," Bernaix said. "But again, the focus is on ourselves…we are looking to match up against an aggressive team defensively and continue to create scoring chances."
