Trailblazers Celebrate Sophomore Class During Final Home Match
GODFREY, Ill. — Lewis and Clark Community College women's soccer celebrated its sophomore class on Tuesday, honoring a group of ten student-athletes who have made a lasting impact on the Trailblazers program both on and off the field.
This year's sophomore class includes Ainara Ruiz da Costa (Andorra), Julia de Ritter (Netherlands), Madelynn Kuhn (O'Fallon, MO.), Isabela Santana (Venezuela), Iona Rovira (Spain), Ella George (Troy, IL.), Kinsley Mouser (East Alton, IL.), Maria Rodriguez (Colombia), Abrianna Garrett (Bethalto, IL.), and Andrea Rodriguez (Mexico).
Head Coach Justin Bernaix reflected on what the group has meant to the program, emphasizing their growth, leadership, and dedication.
"Sophomore night has been enjoyable each season I've been with the program," said Bernaix. "The players deserve the added recognition, and the night also provides a chance for them to reflect on their LC experience together as a whole."
Over the past two seasons, this class has been instrumental in shaping the team's competitive and academic culture.
"This group of sophomores is strong," Bernaix said. "In addition to being good players on the field, they've contributed greatly to our department standards of personal accountability, supporting other sports and fundraising efforts, and working hard in the classroom. All of these things helped grow our program and set good examples for the freshmen of what it means to be a student-athlete at LC."
Bernaix also noted how their leadership and maturity have evolved since their freshman year.
"Nine of the ten sophomores came into a team last season with more sophomores than freshmen," he said. "Several of them took the route of quietly keeping their head down, working hard, and helping the team as best they could. This season, they've shown more personality and leadership, helping create a disciplined yet energetic team culture."
The night was made even more memorable as the Trailblazers capped off the celebration with a region win, a fitting sendoff for the second-year players in their final regular-season home match.
"It's always nice for sophomores to finish their last regular season match at home with a win," Bernaix said. "To get a result with the added recognition from teammates and family is definitely a bonus and one that will plant a few lasting memories as well."
